During my career on international cruise ships over the last three decades, I have experienced several changes, when it comes to leadership and management styles, which we all faced and adjusted to. Managers had to learn to convey orders in a more sensitive way, they had to pay more attention to human aspects and had to adjust their role to even more being a part of the team.

 

It became essential to spend much more time with each individual crew member, practicing motivational skills, being a personal coach and train actual basic professional techniques.

A relevant part is also the permant growth of the vessels and the increasing volume of F&B outlets on each ship, without really having more manpower within the management teams. Also, the schedules and restrictions have changed for the entire crew. To conduct trainings and individul coachings outside the regular working hours seems almost impossible to implement.

 

From my point of view, the solution is to conduct "trainings on the job". During my active time, I used this method for my onboard middle and senior management teams, which had the advantage of evaluating and solving each challenge on the spot. 

 

Simply said, when it was necessary, I was permanently coaching my bar- and restaurant managers during the operation.

 

In the same time they were developing their skills and views. Certainly this in a very sensitive and discrete way, not in a critisizing way or a "pointing the finger at" attitude.

Especially these Managers are essential for the operation, they are in-between the senior managers and the crew, they have to be able to develope and manage their teams to achieve results. It is definitely not anymore about exchanging or sorting, it is all about getting the best out of the team you have. 

 

Another factor is, that qualification and strict classical service are no longer the major criteria for our guests, its more about friendliness, the atmosphere and spirit, and this is what only the service teams can deliver, for the manager it means:
